Do you dream of having six pack abs but figure it’ll never happen so you give up trying??? A strong core is extremely important and means much more than rocking a washboard stomach at the beach! Core strength is important throughout your life. It provides stability for your entire body and gives you better balance and posture. All of this helps to prevent falls and injury and decreases back pain.
Here are reasons why all of us should be working on strengthening our core:
1. A strong core helps prevent injuries
Most movement starts from our centre and moves outward so a strong core will help ensure movements are strong and pain free. Strengthening your core helps improve balance and stability and promotes your pelvis, low back and abdomen to work together rather than having extra pressure on one of those areas and in turn resulting in pain and discomfort. A strong core also provides protection for your vital organs which are right underneath your core wall.
2. A strong core helps improve your posture
Your inner core muscles attach to your spine so stronger muscles help to keep yourself upright. Proper posture helps to alleviate neck and back pain that many of us feel from sitting hunched over a computer for most of the day. If your spinal cord has extra pressure on it because it isn’t well supported by your core muscles then your movements will be affected and it will eventually cause pain.
3. You don’t need a gym membership or special equipment to strengthen your core
Strengthening your core does not require you to leave your home. There are many simple core exercises that can be done without any equipment. For example, planks and bridges can be done in the comfort of your own living room. If you have a fitness ball there are many exercises you can do to help improve your core strength.
