Taking care of your body through nourishment is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. When you nourish your body in the following ways you will feel stronger and better able to reach your goals.
1. Appreciate your body
Many people are on a lifelong quest for the “perfect” body. Trying the latest fad diets or restricting your intake of food in order to achieve that magic weight can be damaging to your self esteem and creates a lot of unnecessary stress and anxiety in your life. We have to remind ourselves that healthy is not one body size or eating style. Healthy can be found in many different sizes and food plans. What we need to focus on is eating a nutrient dense diet that is full of variety and balance. We need to learn to love our bodies as they are and to honor all that our body does for us.
2. Move EVERYDAY!
And by this I don’t mean that you have to sweat it out for an hour each day doing a cardio workout meant for an Olympic athlete!! What works for one body doesn’t always work for others. Movement can be in the form of a cardio or weight workout but it doesn’t have to be. You can incorporate movement into your day by parking a bit farther away from your destination or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. If you prefer to be outside then a nice brisk walk or working in the garden are great ways to get your daily movement in.
3. Eat!
If you are hungry…make sure you eat! Listen to your body and try not to be restricted to food rules. For example, if you feel like having a snack then have one. The important thing is to listen to your body and eat mindfully. Try to determine what is hunger and what might be stress or boredom. When you determine that your body is requiring nourishment then choose healthy, well-balanced food. Don’t forget to allow yourself occasional treats with no guilt attached!
4. Set Boundaries
Give yourself permission to take a break from social media and relationships if needed. Don’t be afraid to say no to an invitation if you’re feeling run down. Protect your energy and your mental health by checking in with yourself daily and paying attention to the signs your body is giving you.
5. Sleep
Sleep is an important way to nourish your body. Depriving your body of sleep and rest can have negative effects on your cortisol levels which can lead to weight gain and other health risks. Try to create a consistent bedtime routine and allow yourself at least 7 hours of sleep each night.
When it comes to your health remember to listen to your body and provide it with nourishment in many different ways. What works for someone else may not work for you. Take your time and be kind to yourself. Your wellness is a journey so set your goals and enjoy the ride!
