You Have Had a COVID test…Now What Do You Do?

Many people are undergoing COVID testing and then remain unclear as to what their next steps are! The Team at ABIM went to work to help our patients, and ourselves, understand what happens after the test has been administered! We thought the best way to help would be to gather the information and then provide you with an outline of WHAT COMES NEXT…AFTER YOUR TEST!

You HAVE Covid-19 symptoms, you are NOT a contact case and you have NOT travelled outside of Canada

  • *self isolate while awaiting test results.
  • *test results NEGATIVE, self isolating can stop 24 hours since symptoms started improving.
  • *test results POSITIVE, self isolate 10 days from when symptoms started and you will be directed by Region of Waterloo Public Health.

You HAVE Covid-19 symptoms, and ARE a contact case OR have traveled outside of Canada

  • *due to potential exposure, you must self-isolate while awaiting results.
  • *test results NEGATIVE, continue to self isolate for 14 days from your last contact to a positive case or from your arrival back to Canada.
  • *test results POSITIVE, self isolate 10 days from when symptoms started and you will be directed by Region of Waterloo Public Health.

You DO NOT HAVE symptoms, but ARE a contact case OR have traveled outside of Canada

  • *self isolate for 14 days after your last contact with a positive case or after your arrival back in Canada, EVEN IF your test results are NEGATIVE.
  • *if you develop symptoms, RETEST as soon as possible.
  • *if your test result is NOW POSITIVE, self isolate for 10 days from when the retest was taken. Region of Waterloo Public Health will direct you.

You HAVE symptoms, but are NOT a contact case or have NOT traveled outside of Canada BUT you HAVE RECEIVED NOTICE of exposure via the COVID alert app

  • *self isolate while you await test results.
  • *test is POSITIVE, continue to isolate for 10 days from when symptoms started. Public Health will contact you.
  • *test is NEGATIVE, you may stop self isolating 24 hours since symptoms started improving.

You HAVE symptoms, and you are a STUDENT/STAFF of a school and you HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED AS A CONTACT

  • *you are required to self isolate for 14 days, or as directed by Public Health, regardless of test results.
  • *all household contacts should also continue to isolate until a negative test result for the individual is received.

You HAVE symptoms, and you are a STUDENT/STAFF of a school and have NOT been notified by Public Health as a contact of a case

  • *self-isolate while you await your test results.
  • *test is POSITIVE, continue to self isolate for 10 days from when symptoms started.
  • *test is NEGATIVE, you may stop self isolating 24 hours since symptoms start improving.
  • *household members do not need to self-isolate but should self-monitor for symptoms.
