Thinking of getting a total knee replacement or have just had one? Physiotherapy intervention is an important aspect of your recovery even once you have left the hospital! After the surgery your physiotherapist will work to get your knee bending and straightening through exercises and manual therapy treatment. A study published in April 2019 demonstrated that there was an improvement in outcome scores for patients who participated in physiotherapy for up to 12 months after their surgery, compared to those who did not. Even though your physiotherapist in the hospital may give you exercises, it is important to follow up with an outpatient physiotherapist once you are home to progress your exercises appropriately and make sure your knee range of motion is improving!
