Effective communication between you and your physiotherapist is an important component to your recovery. It is crucial that you feel like your physiotherapist hears your questions and concerns and provides you with helpful responses. ⠀
The 5 following tips will help you communicate effectively with your physiotherapist and ensure that you are on the correct road to recovery! ⠀
1. Come to your appointments with a list of questions. ⠀
Often, we think of questions after we leave an appointment. It’s best to keep a list of questions to review with your physio for the next time you see them. Keep in mind that the physio does have limited time with you so be sure that It is helpful to keep your questions concise and injury related and writing them down will help you remember! ⠀
2. Be honest. ⠀
Be as honest as you can with your pain levels and adherence to your home exercise program. The more accurate the information you provide to your physio the better they will be able to adjust your treatment plan and home exercises if needed.⠀
3. Be aware of and clear about expressing your goals. ⠀
It’s important for your physio to have a clear idea of what your goals are. Do you want to walk a few blocks or train for a 10 K run? Letting your physio know your goals will help guide their treatment plan for you.⠀
4. Bring imaging reports and test results to your appointment. ⠀
If you’ve had imaging done on your injury and have reports, it’s always helpful for the physiotherapist to see the reports. If you don’t have a copy of the reports, we will work to help get them for you! The more information the physio has about you and your injury the better they can help you reach recovery.⠀
5. Don’t be afraid to discuss setbacks or lack of improvement. ⠀
If you’re feeling frustrated or feel like you’re not improving, it’s very important to let your physio know. Sharing this information will help your physio pinpoint the issues and get you back on the right track. We are here to help you and will make changes if you are not feeling the way that you, and we, want you to feel! ⠀
At ABIM, we want you to feel empowered in your healing journey!
